From Director’s Desk

A gratitude so deep, it had to become a mission.

From Director’s Desk

For nearly three decades, I have lived alongside India’s military community as the wife of an Army officer, and for over two decades as an author and columnist documenting the lives of those who serve.

I have spent countless hours with war widows and disabled soldiers, listening to stories that rarely find their way into official records. I have witnessed the extraordinary courage it takes for a young widow to rebuild her life while raising her children alone, and the quiet resilience a disabled soldier summons each morning simply to begin another day.

Their sacrifice commands our deepest respect. Yet what moved me most was what came after. When the ceremonies end, the uniform is folded away, and the nation returns to its routine, the far more difficult journey of rebuilding a life has only just begun. It is often at this very moment that support begins to fade.

Through my books and columns, I have tried to tell these stories with honesty and dignity. But over time, I realised that documenting resilience was no longer enough. Stories can move hearts, but they cannot, by themselves, create livelihoods, influence policy, or build lasting systems of support. I wanted to build something that would stand behind these stories, not merely tell them.

That conviction gave birth to the Centre of Excellence for the Bravehearts (CoEB), the natural culmination of a lifetime spent listening, learning, documenting, and working alongside India’s Armed Forces community. Through rigorous research, evidence-based policy engagement, livelihood initiatives, skilling programmes, and grassroots action, we are committed to ensuring that no Braveheart or military family is left unseen, unheard, or without opportunity.

This mission cannot be fulfilled by one organisation alone. It demands a collective effort from government, industry, academia, civil society, and citizens alike. We are deeply grateful to be guided and supported by an exceptional group of leaders whose experience, wisdom, and commitment strengthen our mission and help shape its future.

Thank you for visiting CoEB. I invite you to join us in building a future where every Braveheart and every military family can live with the dignity, opportunity, and recognition they have earned.

With hope and resolve,

Ambreen Zaidi
